Monday I went to the treadmill intending to do attempt a few 2 minute quarters. I know that sounds pathetic to many of you, but keep in mind that just a few months ago I could hardly move my fat ass to my mailbox.
I gave up after about 15 seconds, could not do it. I adjusted and did 4 easy miles.
Yesterday I decided to take a break. Instead of running, I watched episodes of 'Ripper Street' which is about a time and place where cops were real cops.
Got up today with my old legs refreshed and hit the treadmill again as the high for today is 35 and windy. (I am on the porch typing this, but dressed toasty warm). I set the automatic on the treadmill at 40 minutes with a couple 7:30 quarters. I made it through 2 pickups and was quite proud of myself.
On the TV I had DVD tribute to George Harrison on. It was quite inspiring. I am a fan of George and all the Beatles. After my 40 minutes, kept going for another 50 at 10:00 pace until the concert was over. I have not run 9 miles in years.
With my ancient Bose 301 speakers a few feet from my ears, the run was great. The music carried me along. Back in the day I sometime carried a Walkman on long slow runs. Here on the back roads, I need my ears alert for cars approaching.
Audiophiles may jest at Bose speakers, but these sound good to me and have for about 20 years.
Music helps me a lot in my life. It is my main stress reliever (beer is a close second). I have more money invested in stereo than most, and consider it money well spent.
While I am on the porch relaxing with cold beer in this freezing weather, I have time to relate a tale. (Us geezers love to talk about the past)
I was in Concord at an evening 5K in my previous running life and up against a rival I often raced. As he and I battled, this guy with white hair jogged on by us carrying a tape player in one hand. That day I met a new friend and peer, Dave Wight. Over the years he beat me more often than not, often carrying that damned Walkman. All his PR's were better than mine at shorter distances. He joined my team, and together we were the base of a winning Masters unit at many races. He pulled me to 27:50 (long time goal) when I was 45 at the tough Maggie 8k. He gave me a whole new perspective on training with music.
So when you can, don't be afraid to crank up your music player as you run.
I also have these McIntosh speakers which cost more than all cars I have owned.
