15 days into the New year I am feeling fine. I have the normal aches and pains of daily running for a new guy, but nothing is now yelling at me to STOP!
The last 8 months have brought me a lot "STOP" moments as things broke and went north on me.
I have tried to make this return to racing with intelligence and patience. Even so, it has been more problem than I would have guessed. Improvement has been slow.
This past week I ran a PR at 10K of 61 minutes. I know that is nothing to post about, but it encourages me. The main thing was that I was not in suffer mode. On the down hills my heart beat actually slowed a little. That is a new thing and is encouraging. (I ease up down hill as my hamstring is still a mess.)
So, on the advice of Coach Sheehan (R.I.P), I am taking this rainy day off from running to sit on the porch and drink beer. I have Simon and Garfunkel on "Central Park".
This month I am working hills a little. My base period did not go well, but I must move on. I am at about 20 miles week. This month I am doing repeats on a hill twice a week. It is a short hill about .1 mile. It takes me 50 seconds, but the deal is not speed but to "push off" in order to work the leg muscles. I need leg strength. Old guys loose that.
I see on line that an old friend of mine is training off the chart good. He did 4 X a mile yesterday at 7 minutes and his heart stayed around 145. That is incredible for a geezer. So far I have not run a mile under 9 minutes, but I will - count on it!!!
