The last time I ran a footrace, I was a young man.
It was a mostly flat course in Cowpens. I ran 20:28 and got 2nd by 6 seconds to the great Gerry Carner (no shame in that)(George Luke was right there in 20:48). I was 38th out of 311.
15 years before I had finished 2 seconds behind Gerry in about 16:45 at the Midnight Flight. We had both slowed by Cowpens , but he still could out kick me. Gerry lives up the road in Clemson. Going through the years, Gerry and George and Steve Annan set the state records as they aged. When I was 46, broke the 15K record in Myrtle Beach. The next week Gerry took a full minute off at Charleston.
Today it is freezing out side and I did a quick? 5K on the treadmill in 28:58. I felt like I was flying.
Last week was the 2016 Cowpens race. I see George Luke won the over 75 age division in 22:53. That is amazing, but so is George. He also beat all the guys over 70 and over 65 and over 60 (since YC member TOR did not attend).
How do I get from 28:50 to maybe a 3rd place on the podium?
Stay tuned, and if possible, post some encouragement here for me.
