I have been in stage one - building a base.
After 7 months, I have improved greatly from where I started which was just walking to my mailbox and back ten times.
I really wanted to be doing much better. I even expected that.
I am not where I thought I would be. (poor me)
My old body keeps breaking.
My oxygen transport system is not what it was when when I was 60.
My plan from day one was to begin to build some toward a race effort with hill repeats beginning January.
I still hope for that, but my base is not near where I hoped for.
My experience has been that the better base you start race training from, the better you do.
I had believed that this month I would be doing a modest 35 miles each week with a long run of 10 miles.
Instead I am on the treadmill so far this month in a struggle to get in a few miles as my hamstring screams at me. The last two times I tried running out side, had to walk home.
It seems that I am presently unable to hit on my heel, and downhills are impossible for me. I am a solid heel striker, but now must land flat to toe hence the need for the flat treadmill. It is that or nothing. I am hoping for 20 miles this week.
My leg is sore from the hip to the knee, and I try hard not to favor it as I jog. The treadmill helps there because if you start to limp, you fall off one side.
No matter. My goal is to give an "honest effort". I am certainly doing all possible to accomplish that. The game is still afoot.
It does appear less likely I will be a threat to the geezers this Spring, but hey - first race will hopefully be one of many to come.
