I kinda like frogs. I suppose most people do. This Summer has proved to be a ‘frog bonanza’.
When I lived in the city, there were not too many frogs in my yard. A few tree frogs were getting by, but there was little habitat for water frogs, and us people with lawn mowers had killed off most of the toads.
Here in the woods it is different. There must be a million different kinds of frogs making a living in my yard. At night, even my fierce dogs hesitate at the door due to the calls coming from the yard.
I have a couple of garden ponds, and many times in the Spring, I order in a 100 bullfrog tadpoles. Those guys get as big as rabbits, but most hop on down to the lake when grown. A few now hang around, and they are fun as they fight like sumo wrestlers after the Sun goes down. It is not uncommon to see a bullfrog out even on a Winter day if it sunny.
I built a perpetual fountain on my deck just outside a picture window on the deck. It is surrounded by ivy and a couple of trees I grow in ½ barrels - a Laurel and a Hawthorne.
I light it at night so the bugs came and then the tree frogs. They hunt in there at night around the fountain, and crawl on the window. Most look like alien space invaders.
This year, the ground is full of tiny frogs. I have about a trillion tiny frogs. I have to walk slowly so as not to step on
the guys. I guess after years of
drought, the early June rain was just right for them. I
suspect most are ‘hoppy toads’. I know
that is not a real name, but you know what I mean. All toads are frogs, but not all frogs are
toads. Toads are a gardener’s best
friend. They eat everything that eats
your plants, and do no harm. If you have
a lawn mower, you might not have many.
Trash the mower, let the grass grow, and don’t run over the frogs, you
need them.
